Ximena is a passionate and resourceful mother of three boys who has been homeschooling for over 17 years. A lover of travel, culture, language, and history, she has gained valuable perspective on how families across nations and backgrounds raise and nurture their children. Through the ever-changing seasons of life, work, and motherhood, Ximena has leaned on God’s grace and wisdom to guide her steps. Her mission is to raise her children according to God’s Word, with eternity in view — and to come alongside and encourage other mothers on their own homeschooling journey.
No matter our language or background, the calling of motherhood and the desire to raise our children in the fear of the Lord should remain our deepest motivation. This session will offer insight into overcoming cultural and language barriers, specifically focusing on Spanish-speaking mothers navigating the challenges of traditional Latin American educational models. The goal of this session is to empower you to embrace home education—where faith, beauty, and full dependence on God transform the journey into one without limits.

Testing Out of college classes with CLEP exams general information. These are great but can change your student’s status-see comment below. You can not list these tests on your high school transcript as courses. A good strategy would be to have your student prepare for one of these tests after spending a year taking the class during his homeschool year in addition to studying using a CLEP guide for that particular test.
They are good to do during summers after college enrollment.

3rd Party ACE credits classes/companies that partner with universities-these credits earned by online classes can be used to fulfill degree requirements, but remember to not gain too many of these credits (like CLEPs) before college enrollment as your student can earn too many credits and lose freshman status and therefore not be eligible for many scholarships. Also, some colleges do not accept these as credit.

SESSION NOTES
Using Plants as Medicine
A mindset shift is needed to use plants as medicine at home.
Common Misconceptions:
-
Natural = Safe:
-
Everyone with X problem should use “this” herb:
-
Stronger or more is better:
How to adjust your mindset and start using herbs with your family:
-
What is the biggest or most common health issue that your family deals with that you would like to address using herbs?
-
Research the herbs related to that health issue including allergies and contraindications.
-
Try the smallest dose of the most basic remedy first.
-
Don’t neglect using food as medicine.
Why plants are safer than pharmaceuticals:
Different Types of Herbs:
How to know what type of herb to use:
Types of Remedies: tinctures, teas, syrups, herbal vinegars, oxymels, infused oils, essential oils, salves, compresses, poultice, food.
How to approach getting to know herbs and where to start:
-
Use what you have.
-
Start with the simplest remedy first.
-
Get a good resource for looking up contraindications. Google is not reliable!
View a list of resources at:
https://botanyinanhour.com/plantsasmedicineresources/
Password: MedicinalPlants25
-
Learn the personality of the herb.
-
Dosage is based on weight. Start small and work up. Uses the smallest amount that will do the job. Remember that herbs take longer to work than standard pharmaceutical medicines.
-
Treat the root cause, not the symptom.
Takeaways:
Ask yourself these questions before using a new herb or remedy:
-
Have I thoroughly researched this plant?
-
Is this a remedy that I can make myself?
-
How much should I buy or make?

Takeaway Quotes:
“It is a great thing to be a parent: there is no promotion, no dignity, to compare with it.” With this declaration, Charlotte Mason begins her first volume.
“We are limited to three educational instruments - the atmosphere of environment, the discipline of habit, and the presentation of living ideas.” - Charlotte Mason
I. Providing Your Atmosphere of Environment
Every home has an atmosphere. It’s a powerful tool - and it’s something that we do have control over. What types of home atmospheres do you see in the three books we discussed? As you develop your home atmosphere, here are some scriptures to start you off on what type of mood you would like your home to have:
Proverbs 17:22: A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
Proverbs 17:1-2 Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife.
II. Providing Habit Training
Charlotte Mason gives us the key to smooth and easy days: namely, building habits of discipline. She says that “a habit is worth ten natures”. For example, if you have learned a habit, whether it is your nature to do something or not, you will do it. You can override a child’s nature of low tenacity by embedding in a child the habit of doing a thorough job.
“It is necessary that the mother be always on the the alert to nip in the bud the bad habit her children may be in the act of picking up.”
III. Providing Living Ideas - that of providing living ideas. She says that living ideas are "...a spiritual germ endowed with vital force - with power to grow, and to produce after its kind.” (Vol. 1). Choose the books and influences to which your children are exposed wisely. Search for the best.
LIST OF BOOKS RECOMMENDED BY HEIDI & TAKEAWAYS
Heidi Illian - writer, podcaster, English teacher, history researcher, and second generation NJHSA homeschooler - developed an appreciation for history at a young age, as she internalized the World War II survival stories of her immigrant grandparents and the experiences of her father, an escapee of Communist Poland. Having taught English and writing in public and private schools, she now relishes the wonderful freedom to implement Charlotte Mason’s principles with her own children, who thrive on living books and have developed a fascination for world cultures and languages. Heidi's writing now focuses on historical research, which allows her to bring history and archeology alive to children through her podcast, Brilliant Mornings, and history magazine, Artifact!
Do you experience the joy of life transformation through living ideas in your home? As homeschool educators, we have three educational instruments: the atmosphere of environment, the discipline of habit, and the presentation of living ideas. Heidi will briefly describe each of the three instruments, describe how Charlotte Mason transformed her homeschooling in light of these instruments, and give practical steps for implementing them in your own homeschool. You will leave equipped to evaluate your own home atmosphere, identify habits in which to guide your children, and begin selecting living ideas that are "...a spiritual germ endowed with vital force - with power to grow, and to produce after its kind.” (Vol. 1).
